Facial Expressions

The follwing pictures illustrate the facial expressions used in the experiment. These are not the actual pictures used in experiment.

Felt smile

The felt smile is hypothesized to be an expression of positive affect. It involves the muscle that pulls the lip corners upward and the muscle that raises the cheeks and causes wrinkles to appear at the outer edges of the eyes.

False smile

The false smile involves only the muscles that pull the lip corners upward. It represents an attempt to appear happy although no emotion is felt.


Felt | Miserable | Neutral

Miserable smile

The miserable smile acknowledges a willingness to endure unpleasant circumstances. It communicates that one will "grin and bear it." The miserable expression is achieved by smiling with lips pressed together accompanied by raised inner eyebrows to indicaate sadness.
